JAKARTA, Indonesia — A powerful explosion at a police station in India on Friday night has left at least nine people dead and 27 others injured, heightening concerns over safety in a region already beset by tensions. The incident occurred when a cache of confiscated explosives detonated during a forensic examination at the Nowgam Police Station.
According to police chief Narin Prabhat, those killed included police officers, forensic personnel, and various government officials who were present at the scene. A press briefing following the explosion revealed that authorities are still determining the exact circumstances that led to the blast, but there are currently no signs linking the explosion to militant activity.
“While forensic and chemical analyses were ongoing, an accidental explosion occurred,” Prabhat stated. He urged the public not to engage in speculation, stressing that any premature conclusions are unwarranted at this stage.
Efforts to identify the victims have been complicated because many sustained severe burns, with reports indicating that body parts were scattered over a significant area. A police source noted that remains were found as far as 328 to 656 feet from the blast site, suggesting the explosion’s ferocity.
Firefighters were dispatched to quell the flames that engulfed the police compound following the explosion. Officials noted that the blast caused extensive damage to the facility itself, necessitating an immediate response from emergency crews.
This incident marks a troubling chapter in a region notorious for its volatile history, particularly between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the territory around Jammu and Kashmir. The tension was further exacerbated just days prior by a car bomb in New Delhi, which resulted in eight fatalities and was classified as an act of terrorism by government officials.
