Explosion at Woburn ATM Sparks Multi-Agency Manhunt for Suspect Who Planted Device

WOBURN, Mass. — Authorities are conducting a multi-agency search for a suspect involved in an explosion at an ATM in a busy shopping plaza. The incident occurred early Thursday morning at the Eastern Bank ATM located in West Marine Plaza, adjacent to the intersection of Interstate 93 and Route 128.

Police responding to a report of someone tampering with the ATM arrived to find evidence of an explosion. They quickly called for backup from the Massachusetts State Police and the FBI Bomb Squad due to the nature of the damage observed at the scene. A preliminary investigation indicated that a lone male placed what appeared to be a pipe bomb on the ATM before detonating it moments later and fleeing the area.

The explosion caused disruptions to nearby businesses, including a restaurant that had to temporarily close during the critical lunch hour. Peter Tran, manager of Saigon Eatery, described the scene, stating there was “debris everywhere” in front of the restaurant. He reported sweeping up small metal fragments that scattered across the plaza following the blast.

Eyewitness Brian Leary, who works at a nearby establishment, noted that the ATM appeared damaged and was cordoned off with tape. He mentioned observing the damage while stepping outside shortly after the explosion occurred.

Miraculously, there were no reported injuries stemming from the incident. Eastern Bank confirmed that no money was taken during the explosion, and the bank’s operations returned to normal shortly thereafter.

As the search for the individual responsible continues, officials have reassured the community that there is currently no ongoing threat to public safety. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward and report their findings. Woburn police can be reached at 781-933-1212, while tips can also be directed to the FBI at 857-386-2000.

The incident has raised concerns over safety in the vicinity, but local authorities are working diligently to ensure that residents feel secure. The investigation into the motive behind the act is ongoing as the community awaits answers.
