RAQUETTE LAKE, N.Y. — Two individuals found themselves hospitalized following a home explosion in Northern New York. The incident took place on Killkare Road in Raquette Lake shortly before 11 a.m. last Thursday when police responded to reports of a fire at the residence.
According to investigators, Joshua Vandyke, a 34-year-old man, was inside the home’s boiler room alongside a 3-year-old child, working on repairing a water line. When Vandyke attempted to ignite his torch, the action unintentionally triggered an explosion, resulting in both individuals sustaining severe burns.
Fortunately, a nearby contractor heard the explosion and was able to quickly locate the fire, extinguishing it before the arrival of first responders. Vandyke and the child were then transported to SUNY Upstate Medical University by Life Net, where they are currently listed in stable condition.
Authorities have indicated that the explosion is believed to have been accidental, and further investigations into the cause are ongoing. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers present when working on home repairs or maintenance, highlighting the importance of taking necessary precautions to ensure safety at all times.
