Suleja, Niger State – The aftermath of a tragic petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction near Suleja in Niger State continues to unfold, with the death toll now reaching 86 and 55 individuals receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the incident. Initially reported as 70 fatalities and 50 injuries, the toll rose as more bodies were discovered and given a mass burial in Dikko.
The devastating event occurred when a speeding fuel tanker crashed at Dikko Junction, resulting in a massive explosion as residents attempted to scoop fuel spilled on the road. The flames claimed the lives of those engaging in the dangerous practice, as well as individuals trying to rescue them. In response to the tragedy, emergency management agencies and local authorities conducted a mass burial late into the night to honor the deceased.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago visited the scene of the explosion and took immediate action, directing the closure of the Dikko bridge to vehicles coming from the Maje axis. Additionally, measures were put in place to ensure road safety and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, extending condolences to the affected families, government, and people of Niger State. He emphasized the need for comprehensive medical care for the injured and the implementation of measures to prevent the recurrence of such devastating events.
Several prominent figures including former President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, expressed condolences and emphasized the importance of investigating the accident and promoting road safety awareness. The Northern and Southern Governors’ Forums also shared sentiments of grief and solidarity with the victims and their families.
In response to the incident, various organizations, including the Federal Government and petroleum workers’ union, called for urgent action to repair road infrastructure, educate the public on the dangers of fuel scooping, and enforce safety standards for handling petroleum products. The tragic event has sparked calls for increased vigilance on explosion-prone highways and expedited completion of critical road projects to enhance public safety.
