The inquest revealed that Jason ‘Jayo’ Brophy, 48, had passed away on May 5, 2023, at his residence on Reuben Street, Rialto, Dublin 8.
Brophy’s brother, Joseph Mullins, shared with the Dublin District Coroner’s Court that his brother had never fully recovered from a past assault that left him with debilitating injuries. The incident had resulted in a head injury, leaving Brophy less than fully able-bodied.
The tragic event that led to Brophy’s ailments occurred during a violent assault on Price’s Lane in Dublin city center on April 26, 2019. The attack was brutal, resulting in numerous injuries for Brophy, including a bleed on the brain, fractured skull, broken nose, broken jaw, and damage to his spine, along with multiple fractured ribs.
In a related criminal case, Valerian Burcovsehi, the assailant responsible for Brophy’s injuries, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. The court heard gruesome details of how Burcovsehi had callously kicked Brophy’s head like a football while he was unconscious, followed by smashing his heel into his victim’s skull.
Brophy’s health continued to deteriorate following the assault, significantly impacting his physical, emotional, and mental well-being. He expressed in a newspaper interview the pain and suffering he endured, describing his life post-assault as a constant struggle filled with medication and dependency on others for daily care.
