Mossbank, Scotland – A man from Mossbank, Scotland, recently avoided a prison sentence despite launching a violent attack on his partner in May last year. Lerwick Sheriff Court disclosed that the man’s partner chose not to request a non-harassment order against him.
During a hearing, it was revealed that the 47-year-old man named Stephen Downton previously pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner, resulting in significant injuries. The assault occurred over several hours on May 17 and 18, 2024, causing the woman to fear for her life.
In court, it was described how Downton strangled, kicked, and repeatedly hit his partner, even inflicting painful injuries to her fingers as she tried to shield herself from the abuse. The assault left the woman with severe bruising around her eyes and a mouth full of blood after being kicked in the face.
Despite the severity of the incident, Downton’s defense solicitor highlighted that alcohol played a significant role in the violence. The solicitor emphasized that Downton had abstained from alcohol since the assault and expressed deep regret for his actions.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank acknowledged the seriousness of the offense but noted that Downton had shown remorse and a willingness to change. As an alternative to imprisonment, the sheriff imposed a community payback order on Downton, requiring him to undergo supervision for two years and six months, along with 300 hours of unpaid work.
