Deputies Hunt Suspect After Chase, Double Crash and Fatal Shooting

Investigators say a relative was killed after an argument between an estranged couple escalated into a vehicle chase and crashes.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Harris County sheriff’s deputies are searching for a man accused of fatally shooting a member of his estranged partner’s family after an argument led to a chase and two crashes early Saturday.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the episode began shortly after 2 a.m. July 25 at a gas station on Veterans Memorial Drive near Spears Road. Investigators said an estranged couple who share an infant had been arguing inside a vehicle before they stopped at the station and continued the dispute outside.

The woman eventually returned to the car and drove away, leaving the man at the gas station, according to investigators. Three other people were inside the vehicle, including the couple’s infant. Deputies said the man then took a red pickup truck that did not belong to him and began pursuing the woman’s car.

During the chase, passengers in the woman’s vehicle contacted relatives and told them about the dispute, investigators said. The pursuit continued through northwest Harris County before the two vehicles crashed near the 12000 block of Veterans Memorial Drive.

The woman’s silver sedan left the road and entered a ditch. All three passengers, including the infant, were ejected, authorities said. They were taken to a hospital in stable condition and were expected to survive. Officials did not release their names or provide more detailed information about their injuries.

The pickup crashed separately nearby and damaged a gazebo, investigators said. At least one person associated with the truck was hurt but remained able to walk after the wreck. Authorities have not explained how that person came to be inside the vehicle or whether anyone else was riding in the pickup.

Relatives began arriving after receiving calls from people in the sedan, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators said an adult male relative approached the man accused of starting the chase, and another confrontation followed near Duran Canyon Lane, a residential street off Veterans Memorial Drive.

Deputies allege the estranged partner drew a gun and shot the relative during the confrontation. Officers responding to the 11900 block of Duran Canyon Lane found an adult man with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The names of the victim and the accused shooter had not been released as of Monday. Investigators said they had identified the suspect, but authorities had not announced an arrest or disclosed possible criminal charges. The sheriff’s office also had not released a description of the suspect or said whether the firearm had been recovered.

The case remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit. Detectives are working to establish the complete sequence of events, including what led to the initial argument, how the pickup was taken and what occurred immediately before the fatal shooting.
