POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Authorities are conducting a death investigation following a fire in a wooded area in Broward County where firefighters discovered a deceased individual. The incident occurred near Northeast 33 Court and Fifth Avenue in Pompano Beach, involving the Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue personnel.
An aerial view from Google Maps reveals that the wooded area is situated behind the Value Pawn & Jewelry store on Dixie Highway, near churches and a public school. The area contains paths and debris, and a street view shows a damaged surrounding fence. Neighbors reported another fire in the same field a few weeks earlier, but there were no fatalities on that occasion.
Witness Christen Rector described hearing “an explosion” and witnessing a series of small explosions before seeing a ball of fire and smoke. Rector called 911 after the incident and shared a photo showing dense black smoke rising beyond the fence. Deputies and firefighters responded to extinguish the fire, leading to the discovery of the deceased individual in the field.
Rector mentioned ongoing issues with people living in the area, setting up tents, and leaving garbage like old tires and shopping carts scattered around. BSO homicide detectives visited Rector for information, but authorities have not disclosed any details about the victim’s age, gender, or identity.
