Among the affected states were Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas, with numerous residents left without power in the aftermath. The storm system also caused significant damage in Missouri and Illinois.
The Southern Baptists have been actively engaged in responding to the extensive damage caused by the series of severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that have plagued the region this spring. Coy Webb of Send Relief highlighted the increased relief efforts that have been mobilized following the weekend’s devastating storms in the southern and central parts of the U.S. According to Webb, the storm activity over the weekend, including at least 20 tornadoes, is part of a larger pattern of severe weather events that have been ongoing since April. Meteorologists attribute this pattern to a consistent flow of warm, moist air fueling the severe storms.
In response to the latest round of storms, organizations such as the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention’s Disaster Relief and Texans on Mission have intensified their efforts in Collin, Cooke, and Denton Counties, where significant damage and loss of life were reported. Teams consisting of assessors, chainsaw recovery units, and chaplains have been deployed to assist with the recovery and relief operations in these areas. Additionally, multiple states have lent their support to the response efforts, with teams from Arkansas, Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, California, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah-Idaho, New Mexico, and Louisiana actively participating in the relief missions. Alabama and Mississippi are also in the process of mobilizing teams to provide further support to the affected areas.
