Police say an 18-year-old South Oak Cliff player handled a rifle at a house party; a teenage teammate was shot in the neck and survived.
DALLAS — An 18-year-old South Oak Cliff High School football player was arrested on aggravated assault charges late Saturday after a rifle fired during a gathering at a southwest Dallas home, wounding a teenage teammate in the neck within hours of the team’s state championship victory.
Police and court records show the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 20 inside a residence on the 6400 block of Knoll Ridge Drive. The victim, a minor whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital in stable condition. The suspected shooter, senior safety Xavier Mayfield, was booked into the Dallas County Jail on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond was set at $50,000 as detectives continued to examine statements from witnesses who were in the home after the title game.
According to an arrest affidavit summarized by authorities, several teammates were inside a bedroom when Mayfield picked up a rifle and moved toward a hallway bathroom. One witness told investigators he believed the gun’s safety was engaged moments before a single round discharged. The document states Mayfield said “a single shot was discharged” as he turned, striking the teammate in the neck. Mayfield tried to help carry the wounded teen downstairs and called 911 before officers arrived at the two-story home, the affidavit says.
Officers recovered the rifle and interviewed multiple partygoers who had returned from the state championship at AT&T Stadium earlier that evening. Police said preliminary accounts indicate the shot fired inside the home rather than outdoors and that no other injuries were reported. The victim remained hospitalized Sunday, and detectives were working to verify how the gun was obtained, who brought it to the home, and whether adults were present when the students gathered after the game. Authorities have not released the make or caliber of the weapon and have not announced additional arrests.
South Oak Cliff defeated Richmond Randle, 35–19, to claim a state title earlier Saturday, capping a season in which the Bears’ defense, anchored by Mayfield at safety, helped carry the program through a string of playoff wins. The school has celebrated recent championships and drawn large community support in Oak Cliff, a historically proud football neighborhood in southern Dallas. News of the shooting spread quickly through local stations and social media, turning a weekend of celebration into an overnight police investigation and prompting questions about supervision at postgame gatherings where teens often congregate after late finishes.
Jail records showed Mayfield remained in custody as of Monday pending an initial appearance. Prosecutors will review the police case file to determine whether to pursue an indictment on the second-degree felony charge. Investigators said they expected to collect additional statements, examine the scene again for trajectory and distance, and retrieve any phone videos taken in the minutes before the shot. Dallas police said they would release updated information after formal interviews are completed and when the victim’s condition is confirmed by family.
Neighbors on Knoll Ridge Drive described a steady stream of cars returning from the stadium, followed by flashing police lights shortly before 10 p.m. One parent who arrived at the scene said many students had not yet changed out of team gear. “It was supposed to be a night they’d remember for the right reasons,” the parent said outside the block as detectives moved in and out of the front door. A separate community group said in a statement that early indications pointed to an accidental shooting, while urging patience as police sort through witness accounts. The school district did not immediately respond to questions about counseling support for students.
As of Wednesday morning, police said the case remains active. Mayfield’s bond is set at $50,000; a court date had not been posted. Detectives plan to complete additional interviews this week and will submit the case to the district attorney for review. The victim’s name and updated condition had not been released.
