STATESVILLE, N.C. — A tragic aviation accident occurred Thursday when a business jet, carrying seven individuals including retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family, crashed at Statesville Regional Airport, resulting in the deaths of all on board, officials confirmed.
The aircraft, a Cessna C550, caught fire upon impact as it attempted to land approximately 45 miles north of Charlotte. Preliminary flight records indicate the plane was under the ownership of a company associated with Biffle.
While authorities have yet to provide a complete list of the victims due to the severity of the post-crash fire, they suspect that Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their children, Ryder and Emma, were among those onboard. Also on the flight were Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.
Biffle, 55, was a prominent figure in NASCAR, securing over 50 wins across various racing series, including 19 victories in the Cup Series. He clinched the Trucks Series championship in 2000 and the Xfinity Series title two years later, earning him a cherished place in the sport’s history.
NASCAR expressed its sorrow following the unfolding events. “Greg was not only a remarkable driver but also a cherished member of our NASCAR family,” an official statement read. “His love for racing, integrity, and dedication to fans and competitors have made a lasting impact on our sport.”
According to flight tracking data, the jet took off shortly after 10 a.m. bound for Florida but later returned to make an emergency landing. Eyewitnesses at the nearby Lakewood Golf Club reported hearing the aircraft at a dangerously low altitude shortly before the crash. One golfer, Joshua Green, described the moment with disbelief, saying they feared for their safety as the plane passed overhead.
An investigation has been launched by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration. Weather conditions at the time included light drizzle and overcast skies, which may have contributed to the incident.
The regional airport serves as a hub for corporate aviation, including operations for several Fortune 500 companies and NASCAR teams. It stands as one of the many airports where incidents are monitored carefully; the NTSB noted that this year alone has seen over 1,300 aviation accidents investigated within the U.S.
