Albuquerque, New Mexico – A dramatic scene unfolded in a courtroom in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a murder suspect, Alexander Ortiz, faced an unexpected attack from the uncle of one of his alleged victims. Ortiz is accused of the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Alianna Farfan, and another woman. The incident occurred during a procedural hearing related to the case.
In a video obtained by local news station KRQE, Farfan’s uncle, Carlos Lucero, leaped over a barrier and rushed Ortiz as he stood beside his attorney in court. Lucero managed to tackle Ortiz to the ground and began assaulting him, with another man, Pete Ysasi, also joining the attack.
The chaotic scene unfolded in the Bernalillo County District Court as court security attempted to intervene. Ortiz’s father also became involved in the scuffle, throwing punches in an attempt to break up the fight. The commotion left Ortiz with cuts to his face, as reported by the police.
Lucero later explained to the police that he felt compelled to act because Ortiz had “killed my niece like a coward.” He expressed no remorse for his actions, stating that it was “worth every moment.” Both Lucero and Ysasi were subsequently charged with assault and battery of a peace officer.
Ortiz is facing charges for the murders of Farfan and another woman, Nicole Maldonado, at the Adam Food Market. He was apprehended by a SWAT team at a local residence. The court officials in Albuquerque emphasized the need for increased security measures following several recent violent incidents.
“This incident is just one example of the ongoing challenges we face. Violence in the court is unfortunately not uncommon,” stated Katina Watson, CEO of the Second Judicial District Court. She commended the efforts of the Metropolitan Detention Center officer who worked to ensure the safety of everyone present during the altercation.
