Imphal, India: Tragedy struck in Kangpokpi district as a man lost his life and around 20 individuals, including eight security personnel, were injured during a violent attack on a civilian convoy over the weekend. The incident unfolded when a mob targeted the convoy, setting vehicles ablaze, throwing stones, and firing shots, leading to chaos and injuries.
Reports indicate that the national highway in Kangpokpi was barricaded with burnt wood, stones, and a group of protesting women blocking the road. Security forces intervened, resulting in clashes with the protesters and causing injuries, including those sustained by the security officers. Unfortunately, the violence claimed the life of one individual amidst the turmoil.
In efforts to restore order and clear the blocked roads, the Manipur government launched special bus services following directives from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. However, the plan faced resistance from protesters, hindering mobility and escalating tensions in the region.
Protesters persisted in blockading the highways, particularly the route connecting Imphal to other districts, leading to traffic disruptions and standstills in Nagaland and neighboring areas. Despite citizens’ attempts to drive vehicles along certain highways in support of the government’s initiatives, clashes and roadblocks impeded progress, with various organizations enforcing restrictions on vehicular movement.
The situation in Kangpokpi remains volatile as authorities strive to manage the unrest and establish control to ensure the safety and security of all individuals in the region. Efforts are ongoing to address the underlying issues fueling the tensions and restore normalcy to the affected areas.
