Condemnation: Government Calls for Thorough Investigation After Attack on BNP Election Campaign in Chattogram-8

DHAKA, Bangladesh — The interim government has expressed strong disapproval following a violent incident during an election campaign event for Ershad Ullah, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) candidate in the Chattogram-8 constituency. A full investigation has been ordered to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, which resulted in injuries to the candidate.

According to preliminary reports from the Chittagong Metropolitan Police, Ershad Ullah was struck by a stray bullet rather than being the intended target of the aggression. The government has extended its wishes for a swift recovery to Ullah and has mandated that authorities conduct a thorough probe into the matter.

In a statement released by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, officials emphasized the severity of the attack and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety of all candidates and citizens engaged in the electoral process. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has instructed security personnel to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The government condemned the use of violence in political proceedings, asserting that such actions undermine the democratic fabric of society. The Chittagong Metropolitan Police have already initiated a manhunt for the individuals involved in the attack.

Officials also appealed to political leaders and their supporters to maintain peace and exercise restraint ahead of the upcoming general elections scheduled for February. They highlighted the necessity for a calm environment conducive to a free and fair voting process.

Reiterating its commitment to ensuring a safe electoral climate, the interim government vowed to implement all necessary measures to safeguard citizens and facilitate credible elections throughout Bangladesh.
