BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and leaders from the National Citizen Party, Akhter Hossen and Tasnim Zara, were assaulted in New York on Monday, prompting sharp criticism from Dhaka.
The government characterized the incident as a politically motivated assault allegedly orchestrated by supporters of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In a statement, officials denounced the attack as indicative of the violent political culture that has emerged during Hasina’s administration, which they claim fosters an environment intolerant of dissent.
“This abhorrent act is a stark reminder of the intimidation and violence that has permeated throughout the political landscape under Sheikh Hasina’s governance,” the statement asserted. The interim government vowed to disrupt this cycle of violence and work toward creating a more peaceful and democratic society in Bangladesh.
Security concerns were heightened given the nature of the Chief Adviser’s visit to the U.S. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had implemented a robust security arrangement for the delegation, including a secure transport plan from John F. Kennedy International Airport. However, last-minute complications regarding visa clearances forced the delegation to utilize an alternative exit, leading to a lapse in the anticipated security measures.
“This oversight inadvertently placed the delegation in jeopardy,” government representatives stated. Despite repeated requests for heightened security measures and guaranteed access at the airport, U.S. authorities did not accommodate those requests.
In the wake of the assault, Bangladesh’s diplomatic mission in New York promptly contacted local law enforcement. The New York Police Department has confirmed the arrest of one individual linked to the attack, while an extensive investigation is underway. Bangladesh officials are actively working with both federal and local authorities to ensure that those responsible face appropriate consequences.
As a precautionary measure, security for the Chief Adviser and the official delegation has been significantly intensified following the attack. U.S. agencies are collaborating with Bangladeshi officials to prevent any future incidents.
The interim government issued a firm warning against political violence, asserting that intimidation tactics, whether perpetrated domestically or internationally, will not be tolerated. “We are resolute in our commitment to protecting democratic values and the rule of law. Any attempts to propagate toxic political practices beyond our borders will be met with legal and diplomatic repercussions,” the statement concluded.
