Community Unites to Honor Victims of Tumbler Ridge Mass Shooting Amidst Grief and Heartbreak

Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia — In the aftermath of a tragic mass shooting that claimed eight lives, including a mother and her son, family members are voicing concerns that their loved ones’ stories are becoming overshadowed by their connection to the perpetrator. Russell Strang Jr. and his wife Ashley are grieving deeply for Jennifer Strang, 39, and her 11-year-old son Emmett Jacobs, who became two of the victims in this heartbreaking event.

The tragedy unfolded on February 11, when 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, the eldest child of Jennifer Strang, carried out a shooting spree. After killing his mother and younger brother at their home, he went to a nearby public school, where he opened fire and took the lives of six more individuals. Van Rootselaar ultimately turned the gun on himself, leaving a community in shock.

In an emotional statement, Russell and Ashley Strang labeled the attack a “selfish act” that has left their family grappling with immense loss. Both residents of Tumbler Ridge, they noted that their grief extends beyond their immediate family to many of the victims, including educators and children who had personal bonds with their relatives.

“It is essential that their names are remembered,” the Strangs expressed. “They were loved deeply, and they deserve to be celebrated for the beautiful lives they led.” They emphasized the need for the community to focus on honoring the victims rather than the tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The couple admitted they had been estranged from Jennifer for years, unaware of the struggles she faced. They asked for compassion, urging the public to refrain from making assumptions that could deepen the wounds felt by the bereaved families. “Not all families maintain close ties,” the couple noted, highlighting the challenges that sometimes exist in family dynamics.

As the community comes together to support one another, the Strangs expressed gratitude for the compassion they have received during these difficult days. They acknowledged the shared sorrow in Tumbler Ridge, where many knew not just Jennifer and Emmett, but also the others who lost their lives that fateful day.

Among the six victims at the school was a beloved teacher and several children who had grown up alongside the Strangs’ own children. “These children were friends, they played sports together. We want to join everyone in mourning and honoring all the lives that were taken,” they said.

In a heartfelt conversation, Russell Jr. and Ashley painted a vivid picture of Jennifer as a devoted mother who would give selflessly to her children. They recalled fond memories, including playful moments with Emmett that showcased his loving spirit. “He had a calming presence and was always excited about life,” they remembered.

Reflecting on what could have been, Russell Jr. shared his regrets about not being more involved as an uncle. “The ‘what-ifs’ consume me. We didn’t have the chance to create more memories together,” he admitted, tears in his eyes.

Russell Jr. urged Jennifer’s surviving children to cherish the good moments spent with their mother and Emmett. He recounted a humorous fishing tale involving Emmett and his younger brother, emphasizing how the boy remained easygoing even in moments that could have upset many.

The Strangs hope that despite the overwhelming grief, the community can continue to honor the lives lost, standing together in solidarity. Their message resonates as they aim to shift the focus back to the valuable memories shared and the lives that were cut short far too soon.
