MACEDONIA, Ohio – Crews are working diligently to clean up the aftermath of a sodium hydroxide explosion that occurred at a chemical plant near Interstate 271. The explosion, which took place on Wednesday morning, involved a tanker truck carrying the corrosive substance parked outside the Royal Chemical Company on South Freeway Drive. As a result of the explosion, three individuals sustained injuries with two in critical condition, and one hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The identities of the injured have not been disclosed as of Thursday.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with the hazardous materials team from Summit County containing the chemical spill. The incident led to a closure of Freeway Drive for most of the day, with the road reopening before 8:30 p.m. EnviroServe, a Cleveland-based company, is now overseeing the cleanup and recovery efforts at the site, following a plan approved by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The cleanup includes the decontamination of nearby vehicles and the cleaning of a drainage ditch on the east side of the building.
