MINEOLA, NY – The Long Island community is reeling after a mother of three was found dead in her home, leading to the arrest of her estranged husband, Asif Qureshi. The 53-year-old faces second-degree murder charges in the death of Aleena Asif, his wife of many years.
Authorities allege that Qureshi waited until their children left for school before entering the residence and using a toxic chemical to kill Aleena. The couple had recently separated, and Aleena had filed for divorce, which investigators believe may have fueled the tragic event.
The incident came to light when the couple’s eldest daughter, 18, requested a wellness check after Aleena failed to pick up her siblings from school. Police found Aleena unconscious with severe burns, and the medical examiner quickly identified the cause of death as chemical asphyxiation.
Qureshi, who was living in Queens, was arrested after a week-long investigation revealed a troubling history of domestic violence. Reports indicate that he became increasingly hostile after being served with divorce papers, leading to stalking behavior.
Neighbors noted Qureshi’s frequent visits to the family home, raising suspicions. On the day of the murder, he allegedly waited for the right moment to enter and attack Aleena.
During his court appearance, Qureshi remained silent, denying the charges through his lawyer. Despite offering to give up his passport, the judge ordered him held without bail due to concerns he might flee.
The couple’s children, aged 18, 14, and 7, are now staying with relatives. The community is left grappling with the devastating loss and the ongoing legal proceedings as they seek justice for Aleena.
