Data indicates that there have been nearly as many fatalities in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody this year as during the entirety of the Biden presidency. According to reports, 20 individuals have died while under ICE supervision since the onset of the current administration, marking a stark increase compared to previous years. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the House subcommittee overseeing the Department of Homeland Security, made the grim figures public, prompting renewed scrutiny of ICE’s practices. In response to heightened tensions, the Department of Homeland Security is intensifying its efforts to recruit health professionals, including doctors and nurses, to enhance the medical care available to detainees.
