DELAND, Fla. — A 69-year-old woman is facing attempted murder charges after authorities say she attempted to take the life of her 13-year-old great-granddaughter, who has cerebral palsy, in what is believed to be a possible murder-suicide case.
Deborah Collier has been charged with attempted first-degree murder following a troubling incident that unfolded in Volusia County. Deputies were alerted to be on the lookout for Collier’s vehicle after family members discovered a suicide note at her home, raising concerns about her well-being and that of her great-granddaughter.
Authorities located Collier driving her car with the unresponsive teenager in the passenger seat. When responders arrived, they observed white pill residue on the girl, prompting immediate medical attention. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she is currently in intensive care.
Inside Collier’s purse, investigators found prescription medications and a note indicating her intention to end both their lives to alleviate the family’s burden. According to the affidavit, Collier and her husband had been the primary caregivers for the girl, who requires constant care due to her condition.
Collier expressed to authorities that the strain of caregiving had become overwhelming, particularly as she struggled with her own health issues. She reportedly felt that suggestions from her daughter to consider assisted living for her great-granddaughter were unacceptable, believing no one could provide the same level of care as family.
The affidavit reveals that Collier’s mental and emotional stress culminated in her decision to harm herself and her great-granddaughter. It is alleged that she purposefully administered medication containing amphetamines and benzodiazepines to the girl, which contributed to the dangerous situation.
