Pembroke, N.Y. — A devastating bus crash on Interstate 90 has left several people dead and many more injured. The accident occurred Friday afternoon as a tour bus was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls, carrying a total of 52 passengers, including the driver.
According to New York State Police, the bus overturned in the eastbound lanes between exits 48A and 49 in Pembroke, just under 30 miles from Buffalo. Emergency responders categorized the incident as a “serious mass casualty” event and rushed to the scene to assist those involved.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bus lost control, veered into the median, and overturned. Authorities confirmed multiple injuries, with several fatalities, including the tragic loss of a child. New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan indicated that many passengers were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, raising concerns about safety protocols on such trips.
At least 24 injured individuals were taken to area hospitals, with two requiring immediate surgery. Medical experts reported that victims suffered a range of injuries, including head trauma and fractures. Additional patients were distributed among various hospitals, including Strong Memorial Hospital and Oishei Children’s Hospital.
Witnesses described seeing the bus abruptly lose control before it overturned. First responders and helicopters were dispatched to assist with rescue efforts, and local officials closed sections of the thruway as a precautionary measure.
In response to the tragic event, New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that her administration was coordinating with local police and emergency teams. She expressed deep concern for those impacted and emphasized the need for prompt assistance.
