Flaxmere, New Zealand — A local man is being recognized for his remarkable courage after intervening to save the life of a stabbing victim during a violent incident in June. Junior Fa’amalosi Isaako is among 10 individuals to be honored at the upcoming New Zealand Bravery Awards, highlighting acts of exceptional bravery in the community.
Isaako was asleep in his home when he was awakened by shouts outside. Upon stepping out, he witnessed a disturbing scene: one man was attacking another, stabbing him multiple times while a second assailant joined in, delivering kicks and punches to the victim on the ground.
Without hesitation, Isaako rushed into the fray. He confronted the attackers, forcing one to flee. After subduing the armed assailant, he disarmed him by striking his arm against the road until the weapon was dislodged. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Isaako quickly moved the injured man to safety, wrapping a towel around his leg to staunch the bleeding while applying pressure to the wounds.
As emergency services were contacted, Isaako continued to provide first aid, assisting responding officers until medical personnel arrived. His swift actions contributed significantly to the man’s stabilization before he was transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital.
Police later reported that a 39-year-old man was taken into custody and charged with wounding with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The assailant is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
Isaako’s bravery, alongside that of a 12-year-old who saved his father from serious injury, will be celebrated at the awards ceremony, where both will receive the New Zealand Bravery Decoration. The remaining recipients, recognized for their courageous acts, will receive the New Zealand Bravery Medal.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon commended the heroes, emphasizing the importance of their actions. “These individuals went beyond their own safety to intervene when lives were at risk,” he said. Luxon underscored that their selfless behavior not only averted additional harm but in many instances, saved lives.
As the community prepares to celebrate these acts of bravery, Isaako stands as a testament to the extraordinary courage exhibited by ordinary people when faced with danger.
