RALEIGH, NC – A community is grieving after a tragic accident claimed the life of Bridgett Bastin, a former Shaw University athlete and beloved kindergarten teacher. The 24-year-old was fatally struck by a vehicle on Interstate 40 early Sunday morning while switching driving duties with her sister.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred near Paige Road when Bridgett and her sister pulled over on the left side of the interstate. Both were standing outside the vehicle when the accident happened. Bridgett’s sister survived the crash.
Micah Wright, a close friend and former track teammate of Bridgett, expressed disbelief and sorrow over the loss. Just a day before the tragedy, they had celebrated Shaw’s homecoming together in Durham.
“I can’t believe she’s gone,” Wright shared, recalling the joyful moments they spent together. “She was such a bright light in our lives.”
At Sally B Howard School of Arts and Science in Wilson, where Bridgett taught kindergarten, colleagues are mourning the loss of a dedicated educator who brought enthusiasm and joy to her classroom. Despite being new to the school, she made a profound impact on her students and fellow teachers.
The Durham police continue to investigate the crash, seeking to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. No additional injuries were reported.
Bridgett’s passing has left a void in both her school and the track and field community, where she was cherished for her vibrant personality and commitment to her students and peers.
As friends and family come to terms with this heartbreaking loss, they remember Bridgett as a positive influence and a source of inspiration to many.
