Youngstown, Ohio – In the wake of a tragic event that shook the city, volunteers came together to beautify Youngstown through the 27th annual Streetscape event. The endeavor aimed to uplift the community and bring a sense of empowerment and joy following the recent explosion at the downtown 12-story Realty Tower building.
The event, hosted by Youngstown CityScape under the theme “CityScape – Greenery & Good Vibes,” saw around 1,000 volunteers working across various sites in the city. People weeded, mulched, planted foliage, and tended to nearly 70 locations, including downtown areas, parks, and spaces near educational institutions.
One poignant moment at the event was a tribute to Akil Drake, a victim of the explosion, where volunteers observed a moment of silence to honor his memory. Despite the tragedy, the community rallied together to make a positive impact and spread love and support to the downtown business community.
Among the volunteers were families, employees from local businesses like Premier Bank, and community members looking to make a difference. For Jayne Gregory and her grandchildren, Leah Arquilla and Dane Arquilla, participating in the beautification effort was a way to contribute to the city’s aesthetic appeal and bring positivity to the Fifth Avenue corridor near Youngstown State University.
Youngstown CityScape’s executive director, Sharon Letson, initially grappled with the decision to proceed with the event after the tragedy. However, the overwhelming response from volunteers and the community reaffirmed the importance of coming together and fostering a sense of unity in the face of adversity.
The planting effort not only aimed to enhance the city’s visual appeal with flowers and greenery but also to provide a sense of place, economic development, and support to the downtown businesses that have faced various challenges in recent years. The event served as a symbol of resilience and community spirit as Youngstown continues to rebuild and grow amidst hardships.
Volunteers from different backgrounds and organizations worked side by side, united in their goal to beautify and uplift Youngstown. The outpouring of support and the collective effort to transform public spaces underscored the strength and solidarity of the community in the face of adversity.
The Streetscape event not only beautified the city but also served as a reminder of the power of unity and collective action in overcoming challenges and building a stronger, more vibrant community. As Youngstown continues to heal and rebuild, the spirit of volunteerism and community engagement remains a driving force in shaping a brighter future for the city.
