Canton, Connecticut – Police in Canton are currently investigating the recent killing of a 450-pound adult male black bear, with the shooter claiming the act was done in self-defense.
The bear was reportedly shot after being seen feeding at an unsecured dumpster in Canton, a community located about 13 miles northwest of Hartford. A spokesperson for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection stated that the incident is currently under investigation by DEEP’s Environmental and Conservation Police officers.
This shooting follows the passing of legislation by the General Assembly, allowing individuals to use deadly force to kill a bear in Connecticut if they believe it poses a threat of inflicting great bodily harm to a person, pet, or is entering an occupied building.
In response to the increase in human and bear interactions in Connecticut, some state legislators had hoped for additional measures such as a bear hunt or restrictions on unintentional feeding of bears. Conservation police are now examining whether this marks the first instance of someone claiming self-defense in killing a bear since the law was enacted.
Over the past few years, there have been numerous bear sightings throughout Connecticut, with reports of bears in nearly all of the state’s cities and towns in 2023. In Canton alone, there were more than 200 bear sightings last year, indicating a growing issue of human-bear interactions in the area.
