Dublin, Ireland – A barbershop owner from Green Briar, Verdemont, Blanchardstown was sentenced to seven years for violently assaulting a man in Mulhuddart, leaving him with life-altering injuries. Craig Maples, 29, had a history of violence, with a previous assault on his housemate two years before the traumatic brain injury incident, as disclosed in court.
The victim, Austin Doherty, sustained significant impairments, including limited mobility in his limbs, after the brutal attack orchestrated by Maples. In a separate assault case in Huntstown, Dublin 15, Maples pleaded guilty to causing harm to his housemate in 2020, leading to emotional and physical distress for the victim, who eventually left the country.
During the Huntstown assault, Maples and two other men forcibly entered the victim’s room, resulting in severe head wounds and a fractured elbow. The victim, unable to return to his residence, endured homelessness, loss of employment, and emotional trauma as a consequence of the attack. Despite the arrest of Maples, the identities of the other assailants remained unknown.
Maples, who founded the barbershop ‘Faded,’ struggled with drug addiction and mental health issues while maintaining his business. His troubled past, including familial violence, was cited as a contributing factor to his criminal behavior. Despite support from his girlfriend and progress in custody, Judge Orla Crowe condemned Maples’ disproportionate response to the victim’s request for peace.
In sentencing Maples to two years and three months in prison, backdated to his guilty plea, Judge Crowe acknowledged his improved behavior in custody but emphasized the severity of his actions. The victim’s journey to recovery and stability, including relocation to Croatia, underscored the lasting impact of Maples’ violent acts.
