YORK COUNTY, Pa. — The recent release of autopsy findings for Matthew Ruth has shed light on a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of three detectives from the Northern York County Regional Police Department. Ruth, 24, was discovered to have died from multiple gunshot wounds, with officials classifying his death as a homicide, though it has been ruled justified.
The incident unfolded on a Wednesday afternoon when detectives attempted to execute an arrest warrant related to an alleged stalking incident that occurred the prior day. Authorities reported that Ruth ambushed the officers as they approached his residence on Haar Road in North Codorus Township, leading to a violent confrontation.
Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaish Emenheiser did not survive the encounter. A fourth officer was injured during the skirmish, alongside a sheriff’s deputy also caught in the crossfire. The sheriff’s deputy has since been identified as Lt. David Godfrey, a veteran with 24 years of service. The identity of the injured detective from the NYCRPD has yet to be disclosed.
Following the initial attack, two officers, including Godfrey, returned fire, which resulted in Ruth being fatally struck. The York County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene shortly after the shooting, with the response team including Deputy Coroner Jacob Clevenger and Chief Deputy Coroner Tania Zach.
As the community mourns the loss of the fallen officers, services are planned to honor their sacrifices. Their funeral is scheduled for Thursday, September 25, drawing attention to the risks law enforcement faces daily.
The York County District Attorney, Tim Barker, emphasized that the use of force by the responding officers was justified in this grave situation. The circumstances surrounding the ambush have prompted discussions about officer safety and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies.
