Attacked: All Injured Officers from MS-13 Assault at Virginia Prison Released from Hospital

RICHMOND, Va. — All five correctional officers injured in a violent incident at Wallens Ridge State Prison have been released from medical care, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections. The attack took place on the morning of May 2 and involved six inmates, five of whom are associated with the MS-13 gang and are in the U.S. illegally. The sixth inmate is a Sureño 13 gang member who has been incarcerated for second-degree murder.

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) confirmed that the assault was premeditated. Chad Dotson, the director of VADOC, expressed relief that the officers have returned home, highlighting the ongoing support and prayers from the agency. “Our entire agency is thankful that all five officers involved have now been discharged. They are constantly on our minds,” Dotson stated.

During the attack, two officers sustained serious injuries and required hospitalization, while an additional three officers, including two who suffered minor injuries during their response, were treated and released the same day. VADOC emphasized that all involved officers are now recovering.

In light of the incident, all six inmates have been transferred to a different VADOC facility, and authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the attack. Dotson commended the prison staff for their prompt response and reiterated the agency’s commitment to prosecuting the involved inmates to the fullest extent of the law. “Our corrections officers are public servants who work tirelessly to maintain safety across the Commonwealth. We will take legal action against any inmate who assaults our officers,” he remarked.

Details surrounding the incident remain limited as the investigation progresses, but the situation has raised concerns about safety protocols in correctional facilities. The incident underlines the risks faced by law enforcement personnel who manage violent offenders daily.

Support for the injured officers is being organized, as the agency reinforces its stance on protecting staff and addressing violence within the prison system. The community and fellow law enforcement agencies are rallying to ensure that the officers and their families receive the support they need during their recovery process.
