Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic – The Kyrgyz government issued a warning against the spread of false information in foreign media and on social media platforms, particularly in Pakistan, following a reported attack on international students. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the situation in Bishkek is calm and fully under control, urging media, bloggers, and foreign governments to rely on verified information from Kyrgyz authorities.
The ministry stated that destructive forces are intentionally disseminating false information about the situation in the Kyrgyz Republic, especially in Pakistan. They urged the public to trust only information provided by Kyrgyz authorities. The release assured that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure security and maintain peace and stability in Bishkek.
The caution comes after a violent attack on foreign students, including Pakistanis, where hundreds of Kyrgyz men targeted buildings housing international students. The police alleged that the attack was provoked by foreigners assaulting locals in the city. In response, Pakistan’s foreign ministry summoned Kyrgyzstan’s top diplomat in Islamabad and handed a protest note demanding safety for Pakistani students and citizens.
According to the Kyrgyz health ministry, four Pakistani students have been treated and discharged, while one remains under medical care. Pakistan has set up emergency hotlines to assist its nationals affected by the violence. Meanwhile, India has advised its students in Bishkek to stay indoors and stay in touch with the Indian embassy.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar urged Indian students to maintain regular contact with the embassy. The Indian embassy confirmed that they are in touch with Indian students, advising them to remain indoors for the time being. The total number of Indian students in Kyrgyzstan is estimated to be about 15,000, but it is unclear how many are currently in Bishkek amidst the unrest.
