Attack in Maui Target Parking Lot Leaves Man Injured; Suspect Arrested and Charged

MAUI, Hawaii — A violent incident in a Target parking lot has led to the arrest of a man accused of attacking another individual with an aluminum baseball bat. The confrontation occurred last Friday night as a couple exited the retail store with a child in tow.

The victim, who requested anonymity, reported that the situation escalated rapidly when a stranger confronted him, his girlfriend, Kiana Bascon, and her 5-year-old daughter. Bascon recounted that the attacker, who was not wearing a shirt, began shouting and brandishing the bat, accusing them of causing his father’s death.

In the chaos, Bascon rushed to their vehicle to protect her daughter, unaware that the man would soon turn his aggression on her boyfriend. A witness to the assault described the scene, recalling how the assailant struck the victim repeatedly. “It was quick—like fast bangs,” the bystander, who wished to remain unnamed, said, detailing the harrowing experience.

Subsequent police investigations identified the attacker as 32-year-old Gabriel Pangkee. He has been arrested and is currently facing charges including assault and criminal property damage. Authorities noted that Pangkee has a troubling history, with multiple prior convictions, including a felony burglary charge from 2018.

The victim sustained serious injuries during the assault, including head trauma and severe damage to his hands as he attempted to shield himself. This injury is expected to require surgery, posing a significant financial burden since the victim lacks health insurance. Bascon highlighted the severity of the situation, saying, “It’s going to be a lot of money with all the hospital visits and recovery.”

In light of the incident, Bascon is urging Target to enhance security measures on their property, emphasizing the need for the store to take accountability. She expressed frustration over the lack of safety and oversight, given that this attack occurred in what should have been a secure environment.

A spokesperson for Target expressed concern for the victim and his family, reiterating the company’s commitment to the safety of customers and employees. The spokesperson noted that the store is cooperating fully with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation.

Gabriel Pangkee is scheduled to appear in court on January 13, where he will face the charges related to this alarming act of violence. This incident has raised questions about safety protocols in public spaces and the responsibilities of businesses to protect their patrons.
