Lucknow, India — A local politician suffered serious injuries in a bold attack late Friday night in the Gosainganj area. Akhilesh Gupta, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator, was assaulted by a group armed with sharp weapons, and a shot was fired at him from a homemade firearm, which fortunately did not discharge.
According to a police report, Gupta’s brother, Shubham Gupta, has alleged that the attack was premeditated, implicating several individuals, including Sudhir Bhatt and Shravan Bhatt, alongside several unidentified assailants. The group reportedly ambushed Gupta, using iron rods and other weapons in a violent confrontation.
Emergency services were called to the scene, where Gupta was treated for multiple injuries, particularly to his hands and legs. Officers from the Gosainganj police station confirmed that an investigation is underway and an FIR has been filed. Local authorities are currently pursuing leads to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the attack.
The attack on Gupta has raised concerns about political violence in the region. Community leaders are urging law enforcement to take decisive action to ensure the safety of public officials, as this incident reflects growing tensions in local politics.
Police spokesperson Dilesh Kumar Singh emphasized the commitment to investigating the incident thoroughly, stating, “We are working hard to bring all those responsible to justice.” The local community is reportedly in shock over the brazen nature of the assault, with many calling for increased security measures for elected officials.
