According to PSA, three prisoners fell victim to attacks from fellow inmates within just one week, prompting calls for urgent reforms from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).
The latest assault that occurred on Sunday was described by the PSA as “very serious,” leading to the victim being rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for medical evaluation. Austin White, PSA’s manager of Policy and Strategy, stated that all three recent assaults involved weapons created within the prison environment, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
White attributed the rise in violence to cost-cutting measures and staffing shortages across the prison system. He highlighted that the frequency of violent incidents has escalated significantly since 2019, emphasizing the need for more thorough searches and increased staff presence within correctional facilities.
