Springfield, Oregon – A 42-year-old man was arrested by Springfield Police on Monday after allegedly assaulting a woman in response to her rejection of his advances. The incident took place near the 500 block of S. 53rd Street, prompting a 9-1-1 call reporting domestic violence around 8:30 p.m.
According to authorities, the victim was repeatedly punched by the suspect, identified as James Vanwormer, who also pepper sprayed another individual at the scene. When a patrol officer arrived and attempted to approach Vanwormer, the suspect quickly advanced towards them. Back-up officers were then called for support to take the suspect into custody.
Despite resistance from Vanwormer, officers resorted to physical force to detain him. Upon returning to the scene, the police discovered the female victim, while the initial male caller had already left. The victim revealed that Vanwormer had forcibly entered her room after she rebuffed his advances, leading to the violent confrontation.
Vanwormer was subsequently apprehended and placed in custody at Lane County Jail. The authorities are working to address the charges against him and ensure the safety and wellbeing of the victims involved in the incident.
