PATERSON, NJ – A Paterson man is facing aggravated assault charges after allegedly attacking two city firefighters who were assisting him when he was having difficulty breathing. The incident occurred early Sunday morning on 16th Avenue in the city.
The firefighters, who were on duty as emergency medical technicians, responded to the man’s home after receiving a call for help. Upon attempting to transport the man on a gurney, he changed his mind and asked to be taken back inside. As the firefighters were leaving, the man reportedly assaulted them, leading to minor injuries for both EMTs.
Following an investigation, authorities arrested 25-year-old Darian Jackson Jr. on Wednesday and charged him with two counts of aggravated assault. Paterson Police Officer-in-Charge Patrick Murray commended the detectives for their swift action in apprehending the suspect.
Murray emphasized that any attack on public officials carrying out their duties is unacceptable. He praised the firefighters for fulfilling their oath to assist those in need, despite being subjected to violence. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the case.
If convicted, Jackson could face a prison sentence ranging from three to five years along with a $15,000 fine for each third-degree assault charge. Details about his legal representation were not immediately disclosed. The injured EMTs were treated at St. Joseph’s Medical Center for their injuries.
