Mays Landing, N.J. — A 64-year-old man from Atlantic City has pleaded guilty to second-degree aggravated assault in a domestic violence case. The plea, made on December 5 before Judge Dorothy Garrabrant, comes after an incident involving significant violence against the victim.
According to sources from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident occurred on June 28 when police were called to the 1500 block of Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City due to reports of domestic assault. Upon arrival, officers learned that the victim had suffered multiple injuries and was in distress.
The victim recounted a terrifying encounter where Derrick Lewis assaulted her, claiming he kicked her in the face and ribs, followed by an attempt to strangle her while she was inside her vehicle. The victim managed to escape the vehicle and sought help from a passerby, which ultimately led to police being contacted.
Following the assault, Lewis fled the scene. However, he was apprehended later that same day by law enforcement officials who had conducted a search in the area. His swift capture underscored the diligence of the Atlantic City Police Department in responding to domestic violence incidents.
As part of the plea agreement, Lewis faces a recommended five-year sentence in New Jersey state prison. He will be subjected to an 85% period of parole ineligibility, in accordance with the state’s No Early Release Act, ensuring he serves a significant portion of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
Sentencing for Lewis is set for March 20, 2026, marking a critical next step in what has been a challenging journey for the victim. The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding domestic violence and the legal responses necessary to protect victims and hold offenders accountable.
