OREM, Utah — A conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, was killed during a public debate at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, an incident described by officials as a “targeted attack.” The shooting has drawn widespread condemnation across the political spectrum, prompting authorities to initiate an extensive search for the perpetrator.
By Friday, law enforcement had arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, a resident of southern Utah, in connection with the shooting. He faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder and felony discharge of a firearm, following his booking at the Utah County Jail.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray is currently assessing the evidence to determine the charges Robinson will face, with an initial court appearance anticipated on Tuesday. Kirk, aged 31, leaves behind his wife, Erika, and two young children. A public memorial service is slated for Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Authorities have begun to piece together Robinson’s background. Although not a student at Utah Valley University, Robinson’s family indicated he had become politically active in recent years. He previously attended Utah State University for one semester and was enrolled in a technical college’s electrical apprenticeship program.
Robinson’s family is described by neighbors as supportive and involved in their community. They expressed concern regarding his mental health, revealing that he had communicated a desire to avoid capture during the heightened police attention surrounding the shooting. His father reportedly recognized his son in media images and tried to persuade him to surrender, eventually leading to Robinson’s detention by federal authorities.
Tracking Robinson’s movements prior to the shooting revealed he arrived on campus in a gray Dodge Challenger. Video footage shows him proceeding to a rooftop of the Losee Center, from where the gunshot was fired. Only a single shot was reported, which struck Kirk in the neck.
Investigators recovered a high-powered rifle believed to be the weapon used in the attack, found hidden in a wooded area. Ballistics tests indicated engravings on the recovered bullet casings carried provocative messages, suggesting a calculated intent.
In the aftermath, Governor Spencer Cox referred to the event as a political assassination, while other officials have maintained that the shooting was directed at Kirk alone. Despite the heightened public interest, authorities have indicated that no additional suspects are being sought at this time.
