Benin City, Nigeria – Authorities in Edo have detained two individuals in connection with a violent assault on Iguikpe Community in Benin City that resulted in two individuals sustaining critical injuries. The attack, believed to have been orchestrated by a former community leader, left the current youth leader, Victor Ogierioba, and another resident, Efe Agbaoghogho, with gunshot wounds.
Police spokesperson, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, disclosed that a report was received on Feb. 28, around 4 p.m., detailing how the former youth leader and armed accomplices fired shots indiscriminately in the community. Prompt action by officers from Iyekogba Division and Operation Rescue led to the arrest of Edobor Edwin and an individual known as Osator, while others managed to flee the scene.
The victims sustained serious gunshot wounds to the abdomen and face, and are currently undergoing medical treatment. Security operations have since restored calm to the area, with investigations ongoing to capture the remaining suspects. The State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is now handling the case under the directive of Commissioner of Police, CP Betty Otimenyin, who has issued a stern warning to criminals in the region.
The police force is adamant about stamping out lawlessness and encourages residents to refrain from vigilante actions, instead urging them to report any dubious activities to authorities. CP Otimenyin assures the community of Iguikpe and the broader Edo population of their safety, advising them to carry on with their daily activities without fear of further disruptions.
