Davangere, Karnataka – The Davangere district police made a breakthrough on Sunday with the arrest of 25 individuals in connection to the violent protest against the alleged ‘lock-up death’ of a detainee in Channagiri. The Superintendent of Police, Uma Prashanth, mobilized five teams to apprehend those responsible for vandalizing the police station, pelting stones, damaging police vehicles, and injuring officers.
Authorities utilized CCTV footage and cellphone videos to identify the culprits involved in the vandalism, leading to the arrest of the suspects. The Channagiri police station filed six cases related to the violence on Friday night, resulting in 25 arrests across four cases. The suspects were presented before the court for further proceedings.
The unrest stemmed from the case of Adil, who passed away at the police station in Channagiri after being brought in on a gambling charge. The incident sparked allegations of a ‘lock-up death,’ prompting a protest outside the police station that escalated into violence, causing injuries to 11 officers. The Opposition denounced the State government for the breakdown in law and order, leading to the suspension of two police officers as acknowledged by the Chief Minister.
In response to the volatile situation, additional police forces were deployed in Channagiri to maintain order. The authorities emphasized vigilance over social media activities, warning of strict consequences for individuals spreading provocative posts, statements, or videos. Home Minister G. Parameshwara revealed that an inquiry was initiated into the alleged custodial death, resulting in the suspension of an Inspector and a DySP due to negligence in handling the situation.
