Draper, Utah – A man with a violent history was taken into custody on Wednesday in connection with a horrific assault that occurred back in October. The victim, who was walking to work, was reported to have been stabbed, sexually assaulted, and set on fire during the attack. Court documents reveal that Robert Reins, 52, is now facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, and aggravated assault causing a loss of consciousness as a result of a lengthy investigation.
The incident took place on October 1st, around midnight, when the victim was on his way to a fast-food restaurant in Draper. As he walked down 700 East from the Kimball’s Lane TRAX station, a deer suddenly appeared from an empty field, causing him to be startled. Subsequently, the victim was accosted by a stranger who demanded him to repeat what he said, leading to a confrontation. The victim, not wanting trouble, attempted to walk away but was then assaulted from behind by the attacker, who proceeded to harm him with a knife and sexually assault him.
Following the assault, the victim was discovered by first responders from the Draper Fire Department and was promptly taken to the hospital to receive treatment for his severe injuries. Evidence collected at the scene indicated the presence of cigarette butts, an energy drink can, and a beer can. A sketch of the suspect was created by an artist from the attorney general’s office, depicting a tall, shirtless man with distinctive characteristics.
After a thorough investigation, the Draper police managed to locate a homeless man resembling the sketch and exhibiting erratic behavior near the convenience store where the attack occurred. The man, identified as Robert Reins, caught the attention of law enforcement due to his resemblance to the suspect and past interactions with the police. Upon being identified by the victim during a lineup, Reins was taken into custody for questioning and further investigation.
During the interrogation at the Draper Police Station, it was suggested that Reins may be suffering from an undiagnosed mental health issue, with his responses appearing disconnected from reality or erupting into rage unexpectedly. Currently, no formal charges have been filed against Reins, who remains incarcerated without bail at the Salt Lake County Jail. The case continues to unfold as authorities work to determine the full extent of Reins’ involvement in this heinous crime.
