WICHITA, Kan. — An 18-year-old man was taken into custody early Saturday morning after allegedly assaulting a family member with a rifle and making threats that escalated into a standoff involving a specialized police unit. The incident occurred in the 2000 block of South Mosley, prompting a heavy law enforcement response.
According to Wichita Police, the situation began just before 1 a.m. when a relative sought assistance from authorities, reporting that Christopher J. Cooper had struck their 42-year-old stepmother with a firearm and threatened to open fire on individuals present at the residence. Police later found the victim at a separate location, where she was treated for injuries to the back of her head.
As police gathered information from witnesses, they learned that Cooper had reportedly issued alarming threats, including intentions to confront law enforcement. Officers believed Cooper was confined to a detached garage on the property and attempted to initiate communication using aerial drones, though those efforts did not yield any results.
In light of the escalating situation, SWAT Team members and Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene. Authorities obtained a search warrant for the residence and the garage, allowing them to further approach the suspect.
Once equipped with the warrant, SWAT personnel used non-lethal methods, including bean bag rounds and a noise-flash diversionary device designed to disorient suspects. Following the deployment of the distraction device, Cooper exited the garage, where he encountered law enforcement and a police K9. He surrendered without incident.
The injured stepmother was transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and was later discharged. Cooper was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail, facing charges that include aggravated assault, use of a deadly weapon, and criminal threats.
Authorities emphasized the importance of responding quickly to reports of domestic violence, highlighting the potential dangers posed when weapons are involved. The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement processes the incident.
