Arrest of Suspect in Lake County Cold Case Marks Breakthrough After Nearly Two Decades

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — In a significant development in a long-unsolved case, authorities have arrested a man in connection with a brutal sexual assault that occurred nearly two decades ago in Tavares. Larry Franklin Tucker Jr., 44, was apprehended in Ohio on October 9 and faces charges related to the attack on a 65-year-old woman in her home.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported that Tucker’s arrest follows a meticulous investigation that utilized genetic genealogy and advanced forensic technology. The DNA evidence collected from the crime scene in October 2007 had lingered in a database without any matches until recent technological advancements provided new avenues for solving cold cases.

On the evening of October 22, 2007, police allege that an unknown assailant entered the victim’s home, subjecting her to a two-hour assault before fleeing on foot. At the time, investigators entered the suspect’s DNA into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), but no connections were established.

In 2018, the Sheriff’s Office partnered with Parabon NanoLabs, aiming to harness cutting-edge methods for forensic analysis. Parabon’s Snapshot Phenotyping technology allowed investigators to generate a predictive profile of the suspect, revealing potential physical traits and ancestry. This innovative approach led to the development of a DNA profile that could be submitted to genetic genealogy databases.

By November 2018, Parabon identified a person of interest in Ohio, leading detectives to seek a search warrant for Tucker’s DNA. Subsequent tests confirmed that his DNA matched the profile from the 2007 crime scene. After his extradition to Florida, Tucker was booked into the Lake County Jail on October 19.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials encourage anyone with additional information about Tucker or the case to reach out. This arrest represents a vital breakthrough in a case that had remained open for 18 years, demonstrating the power of forensic advancements in bringing justice to victims.

The efforts of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Parabon NanoLabs emphasize the importance of technological evolution in police investigations. With the ongoing pursuit of justice, residents in the community remain hopeful that more unsolved cases may soon see resolution through similar breakthroughs.
