Arrest Made in Malaita as Prime Suspect Detained Following Attack on CCECC Worker

Auki, Solomon Islands — Police have apprehended a 40-year-old man believed to be the main suspect in an assault on a worker from the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) at the Kolofe campsite, located in northern Malaita Province. The arrest occurred on February 12, with significant assistance from local residents.

According to Superintendent Michael Ramosaea, the Supervising Provincial Police Commander of Malaita, officers had attempted to locate the suspect multiple times prior to this successful operation. The community played a crucial role in the early morning capture at the suspect’s home village.

The suspect is now in custody at Auki Correctional Centre, where he faces charges stemming from a brutal attack that took place on December 9, 2025. Following that incident, he reportedly issued threats against both CCECC employees and police personnel, raising concerns about ongoing safety in the region.

Ramosaea confirmed that the suspect has been charged under Section 226 of the Penal Code for grievous harm and is slated to appear in court at a later date. He also mentioned that there are outstanding charges against the suspect from previous incidents, which he had failed to address in court.

The Malaita Provincial Police are now focusing on ensuring the safety of the CCECC workers and restoring peace within the community. The involvement of local residents has been vital in maintaining order and bolstering police efforts.

As the investigation continues, officials emphasize the importance of community cooperation in combating crime, highlighting how collaborative efforts can lead to more effective policing and a safer environment for all residents.
