Bordeaux, France – A suspected extremist with ties to a male incel group was arrested in Bordeaux, France, for allegedly planning a violent attack on the Olympic torch relay. The suspect, identified as Alexandre G., 26, was apprehended by authorities who feared he might pose a threat to the procession taking place in the city.
Authorities revealed that they had thwarted a potential attack on the event, which started in the morning and was set to conclude by 7:30 pm local time. Interior minister Gerald Darmanin commended the police for their prompt response to the situation but provided limited information on the alleged plot.
According to prosecutors, Alexandre G. was associated with the online incel movement, a group primarily comprised of young men who struggle to form romantic relationships. They cited disturbing messages written by the suspect that appeared to glorify criminal acts and referenced a mass shooting in the United States.
The torch relay, part of the build-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games slated to commence on July 26, brought together numerous women, including athletes, in the procession across French territories. In light of the threat, an extensive security operation involving thousands of police and gendarmes was mobilized to safeguard the event and its participants.
Prosecutor Frédérique Porterie announced the launch of a judicial investigation into Alexandre G.’s behavior, noting that the suspect, who had no prior criminal record, was in custody at a secure police station in Bordeaux. During a search of his residence, authorities seized a rubber pellet-firing revolver, multiple mobile phones, and a computer.
Alexandre G. reportedly admitted to considering an unspecified act, raising concerns that his intentions may have been targeted at the Olympic Flame relay. He allegedly made references to Elliot Rodger, a notable incel perpetrator responsible for a deadly rampage in Isla Vista, California, a decade ago.
The arrest of Alexandre G. comes in the wake of recent incidents involving individuals with misogynistic views carrying out violent attacks against women, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by such extremist ideologies. Authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent and respond to potential acts of violence, particularly in high-profile events like the Olympic torch relay.
