Hawthorne, California — SpaceX has reported an anomaly involving one of its Starlink satellites, potentially triggered by a minor explosion. The incident resulted in a rapid decrease in the satellite’s orbital altitude and the emission of trackable objects into space. According to SpaceX, the anomaly led to the venting of the satellite’s propulsion tank and caused the orbit to decay by approximately 2.5 miles.
Orbital tracking experts from LeoLabs attributed the problem to an internal energetic event, rather than a collision with other space debris. The company noted that the satellite remains largely intact but is currently tumbling in orbit and expected to reenter Earth’s atmosphere within weeks. SpaceX confirmed it is collaborating with NASA and the U.S. Space Force to monitor the satellite’s remnants, assuring that its trajectory poses no risk to the International Space Station or its crew.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another Starlink satellite that narrowly escaped a collision with a Chinese counterpart operated by CAS Space. Michael Nicholls, a vice president at Starlink, emphasized the importance of inter-company coordination, highlighting that the lack of shared positioning data can lead to dangerous situations in Earth’s orbit.
Starlink’s vast constellation comprises nearly 9,300 active satellites, accounting for around 65% of all functioning satellites, excluding those that are inactive. This fleet has grown significantly in 2023 alone, with over 3,000 satellites launched on 121 different missions, averaging one launch approximately every three days.
The incident raises questions about space safety and the increasing congestion in orbital pathways. Experts in space traffic management are concerned that without adequate data sharing among satellite operators, the risks of collisions and operational anomalies will continue to escalate.
While SpaceX maintains its focus on expanding satellite coverage and capabilities, the company now faces heightened scrutiny regarding its safety protocols and communication with other space operators.
