NORTH CODORUS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A tragic confrontation unfolded on September 17 when detectives pursuing a stalking suspect entered a residence and were met with a brutal ambush. The incident, occurring in the afternoon, resulted in the deaths of three Northern York County Regional Police detectives and left two others injured, including a sheriff’s deputy.
The officers were acting on information related to 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth, who had been observed staking out the home of his ex-girlfriend. Earlier, she had reported her truck being set ablaze, a suspected act of arson connected to Ruth. Evidence gathered from a security camera showed him, armed and in camouflage, aiming a rifle at the property days before the attack.
On September 16, following the stalking report and subsequent investigation, authorities secured a warrant for Ruth’s arrest. Detectives executed a search warrant at his home, but Ruth remained at large. The next day, feeling the urgency of the situation, a team of detectives returned to the site where the stalking incident had occurred.
As detectives approached the residence to serve the warrant, one officer, Detective Isaiah Emanheiser, opened the front door. In an instant, Ruth opened fire with an AR-15-style rifle, equipped with a suppressor, striking Emanheiser, his partner Detective Mark Baker, and Sergeant Cody Becker before the officers could react. A fourth detective was seriously injured but survived, while another officer outside managed to return fire, ultimately bringing down the suspect.
District Attorney Tim Barker described the event as a calculated ambush, rooted deeply in domestic violence motives. He emphasized the narrow escape the ex-girlfriend and her mother had, stating that their presence at the home likely would have led to their deaths. The investigation into this incident has raised awareness about the perils associated with domestic disputes and the potential for violence that can arise.
As the community grieved the loss of their fallen officers, many expressed their sorrow and support, gathering along the streets for a procession to honor the detectives. Barker lauded the outpouring of community support, noting it was a testament to the resilience and solidarity of York County.
